10 Small Healthy Changes to Make in 2016

Start the new year right with these small changes to make to your lifestyle for a healthier and fitter you!

  1. Ditch the margarine! It's artificial and bad for your health. Switch to butter from a grass-fed source such as Kerry Gold.

  2. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night. If you're tired you're far more likely to reach for a sugary or carby snack to help you have enough energy to get through the day.

  3. Ditch the pop!! Fizzy drinks are doing nothing for your health and most likely helping you put on weight. Switch to water instead. Try blinging your water up with cucumber, lemon or lime to make it more exciting.

  4. Try a high protein breakfast to keep you fuller for longer throughout the day and to avoid crashes in energy. Try scrambled eggs with spinach and avocado for example.

  5. Aim to add a plank in after every workout even if you've been for a jog. Core strength will help to avoid injury, help prevent back pain, improve posture and help you tone your abs.

  6. If you're bored of eating the same old veg try using a spiraliser to mix things up! Courgette can be spiralised and used as a substitute for spaghetti if you want to try and reduce your carbohydrate intake.

  7. Start an exercise and/or food diary. Many people convince themselves that they are exercising more than they actually are and seem to forget all the little things they pick at through the day such as 'treats' in the office!

  8. Switch to whole milk rather than skimmed milk. You're going to get far more nutritional value from the full fat milk than the skimmed milk that's been processed and heated to death.

  9. Skip the breaded fish and breaded chicken/meat. Buy fish and meat in it's natural state and make it more exciting with a mixture of herbs and spices. Ginger, garlic, spring onion and chilli are my favourite as well as Jamaican jerk seasoning.

  10. Make yourself accountable with your goals. Maybe get a friend to do the resolutions with you and report in to each other as to how you are progressing. Having to acknowledge to someone whether you have achieved your goals should make you more motivated. Good luck and here's to a happy and healthy 2016.
